In their second fixture of the season the Junior 1st Team played Nottinghamshire and Staffordshire on Wednesday 26 July 2017 in the Midland Region North Junior Inter-County League. The matches were played at Telford Golf Club.
In the morning, the team had a very early start which was rewarded with torrential rain and dull skies! Playing a very strong Nottinghamshire side Emily Dunne managed to secure a half in a well fought and skilful match. Olivia Barrs, Claire Keogh and Katie Leck tried hard but were outplayed by their young opponents. But with a strong performance Kirsten Thorpe won her match on the 16th green winning 3 & 2.
The weather brightened up for the afternoon match against Staffordshire although strong winds did come into play towards the middle of the rounds. Unfortunately, Emily Dunne had to concede her match due to injury but recovering from her disappointment of the morning match Captain Olivia Barrs stamped her authority early on securing a win (6 & 5) on the 13th green. Sadly, this impetus could not be backed up and the other 3 matches were lost.
Overall, whilst the team were not as successful as they would have liked to have been they tried very hard against the two strongest counties in the league. They never gave up and gained very valuable experience on a new course.
The final match of the league will take place at Trent Lock G C on 21 August 2017 when we take on Lincolnshire. The girls will have it all to play for because a win would almost certainly give us third place in the league.
