1st Team v Senior Men

Leicestershire & Rutland Ladies Claim Victory Over Senior Men at Birstall

The annual fixture between the Leicestershire & Rutland Ladies 1st Team and the Senior Men once again delivered a fantastic day of competitive golf at Birstall Golf Club, played in excellent spirit from start to finish.

The match, contested in a 4BBB (Fourball Better Ball) match play format with shots, proved to be as closely fought as ever, with every game remaining competitive right to the closing holes. In the end, it was the Ladies team who edged the contest, securing a well-earned 3–2 victory.

A Fixture with Strong County Tradition

This longstanding match has become a valued part of the county calendar and is traditionally played at the same venue as the Ladies County Championship. The fixture was originally established during Carolyn Parkes-Walley’s captaincy, alongside her father Nick Walley, who was Senior Men’s Captain at the time—creating a tradition that continues to strengthen connections across county golf.

1st Team v 2nd Team

L&RLCGA hosted an exciting internal match on Sunday 22nd March, bringing together the 1st Team and 2nd Team for a competitive and valuable early-season fixture at Kilworth Springs Golf Club.

The match provided a great opportunity for both captains, Rachel East and Tracey Bates, to experiment with new pairings ahead of the upcoming season. With plenty of talent across both squads, the fixture was an important step in assessing combinations and building strong partnerships.

It was also a special day for Ella Cunningham and Lucy Wheeler, who both made their debut appearances for the 1st Team. They rose to the occasion well and contributed to a strong overall team performance.

The format for the day was greensomes match play over 18 holes, offering a great balance of strategy and teamwork. Conditions were ideal, with fine weather and a course presented in good condition, allowing all players to perform at their best.

All matches were played in an excellent spirit, with sportsmanship evident throughout — a true reflection of the values of L&RLCGA. The 2nd Team put up a determined and spirited challenge, making every match competitive.

However, the strength and consistency of the 1st Team pairings ultimately proved decisive, with the 1st Team securing a 4–0 victory.

The match was a great success, providing both teams with valuable experience and insight as they continue preparations for the season.

Start of Season Get Together

Start of Season Get Together - Charnwood Forest Golf Club

The 2026 season for L&RLCGA got off to a fantastic start on Sunday 1st March with the annual Season Get Together — a much-anticipated event that brings together players from the 1st Team, 2nd Team, and our talented juniors for a fun and competitive Am-Am.

This event plays an important role in building connections across the squads, offering a relaxed and welcoming environment where players can get to know one another better. It is also a valuable opportunity to integrate our juniors into the wider county setup, helping them feel part of the team as they continue their development.

We were delighted to be hosted by Charnwood Forest Golf Club, who provided a warm and friendly welcome from the moment teams arrived. The Lady Captain and her team were on hand to greet players and supporters, setting a positive tone for the day. They also gathered at the first tee to watch the teams get underway, adding to the sense of occasion.

County President Peggy Remington officially started play on the first tee and then made her way out onto the course, offering encouragement and support to players throughout the round — a gesture that was greatly appreciated by all involved.

Conditions could not have been better. The weather was excellent for early March, and the course was presented in fantastic condition.

The competition proved to be closely contested, with many teams returning strong scores. In the end, victory went to the team of Ellie York, Helen Cox, Edie Speirs and Gangorti Shariah who triumphed on countback after an excellent round.

Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day and a perfect way to kick off the season. Our thanks go to Charnwood Forest Golf Club for their hospitality, and to everyone who took part and helped make the event such a success. We now look forward to an exciting season ahead.

Range Night - Forest Hill

L&RLCGA Range Night at Forest Hill Golf Club

L&RLCGA recently held another successful Range Night at Forest Hill Golf Club, bringing together a mix of 1st team, 2nd team, and junior squad members for an evening of practice, camaraderie, and team bonding.

The sessions always begin with time to warm up, socialise, and catch up with teammates, setting a friendly and inclusive atmosphere. Once the warm-up was complete, participants moved into challenges and team games in small groups, ensuring everyone had the opportunity to play with different team members and build connections across squads.

Tonight’s session featured a variety of activities designed to develop both skill and enjoyment:

Speed Sticks for enhancing swing speed and power, putting challenges to refine precision on the greens and Trackman games to measure progress and introduce a fun competitive element.

The combination of focused practice, friendly competition, and squad bonding made for an engaging and productive evening. These range nights continue to provide a valuable opportunity for members of all squads to improve their skills while fostering team spirit.

L&RLCGA looks forward to continuing these sessions throughout the winter, supporting player development and creating enjoyable experiences.

L&RLCGA Strength & Conditioning Golf Fitness Programme

L&RLCGA Strength & Conditioning Golf Fitness Programme

With Matt Rollins Golf Fitness

L&RLCGA has successfully started its new Strength & Conditioning Golf Fitness programme in partnership with Matt Rollins Golf Fitness. Two introductory sessions have already taken place, one evening session and one Saturday morning session, both of which were very well attended and positively received.

The opening session provided a comprehensive overview of the key physical components required to enhance golf performance. Matt introduced members to the fundamental areas of training essential for long-term development, including mobility, strength, stability, power, and injury prevention.

Practical elements of the sessions included:

Pre-round and range warm-up routines (both with and without a golf club) Strength training exercises specific to golf development of explosive power, golf-specific movement drills designed to improve efficiency and control.

In addition to the physical training, the sessions encouraged open discussion around areas of the game members felt they wished to improve. One common concern raised was whether speed training might negatively impact accuracy and consistency on the course.

Matt addressed this by explaining that strength training, when programmed alongside separate speed training, actually raises the athlete’s overall power ceiling. This approach enables golfers to improve their top-end speed and increase their natural on-course swing speed without compromising control or accuracy.

The early sessions have provided members with a clear understanding of how structured, golf-specific physical training can positively influence performance throughout the season.

Following the sessions, Matt commented:

“I really enjoyed working with everyone and wish the whole group a great season ahead.”

L&RLCGA looks forward to continuing the programme and supporting members in developing stronger, more resilient and more powerful golf performance throughout the year.
