The first day of the Leicestershire & Rutland County Championships took place today, Friday 6 May 2016 at Hinckley Golf Club. The weather has been fine and sunny and 30 competitors have played 36 holes stroke play to qualify for the knock out stages of this year's Championship. The top eight players qualify for the Championship quarter finals and the next eight qualify for the Russell Trophy quarter finals due to be played on Saturday 7 May.
The course was in fabulous condition but players found conditions difficult. Putting seemed to be a particular issue for everyone but despite this there were some good scores returned in both the morning and afternoon sessions.
The best gross score of the day over the two rounds was 154 by Carolyn Parkes-Walley of Cosby Golf Club. The net prize went to Junior Captain Ellie York of Hinckley Golf Club with a gross score of 155 less 12 to give a net score of 143. Second net was Emma Watson with a gross score of 165 less 18 to give a net score of 147.
It was great to see six of our talented juniors taking part in this Championship.
The eight qualifiers for the Championship match play are Carolyn Parkes-Walley, Ellie York, Imogen Huxley, Helen Lowe, Tracy Bourne, Jo Morris, Gemma Parkes-Walley and Florence King.
The eight qualifiers for the Russell Trophy match play are Emma Watson, Jo Mayfield, Cath Arter, Emily Dunne, Clare Bailey, Lydia Sharpe, Alison Smith and Sharon Statham.
A good day was had by all and we now look forward to the quarter and semi finals of both the Championship and the Russell Trophy which take place tomorrow. All supporters are welcome.
