2017 Baxter Trophy Finals

LRLCGA Noticeboard : 2017 Baxter Trophy Finals

The semi-final and final rounds of the Baxter Trophy were played at Longcliffe Golf Club on Sunday 15 October.   We were fortunate to have a lovely autumn day once the early morning mist cleared.  As expected some fabulous golf was played in both semi-final matches.    The first match was closely fought between Cosby Golf Club and Longcliffe Golf Club and went all the way to the 18th hole with Cosby eventually winning this match 1 up and qualifying for the afternoon's final.  The second match was between another Cosby Golf Club team and a team from Kirby Muxloe Golf Club.  It was another hard-fought game but, as in the first match, Cosby Golf Club managed to come out on top, winning 4 and 2 and also qualifying for the afternoon's final.

The afternoon final was therefore contested between the two teams from Cosby Golf Club.  The last time that two teams from the same club qualified for the final was in 2005 and in a surprising coincidence, the two teams qualifying that year were from Cosby Golf Club and the final was held at Longcliffe Golf Club – obviously the course suits players from Cosby Golf Club.   Following on from the morning’s play, some more quality golf was on display in the afternoon.  The Cosby A team went 2 up after 3 holes but the B team fought back to all square by the 7th hole and from then on apart from one hole the match was all square until the 16th hole when the A team once again went one ahead.  The match eventually went to the 18th hole with the A team holding onto their one-hole lead to become the Baxter Trophy winners for 2017.

Congratulations to all of the teams who reached the semi-finals and final of the Baxter Trophy this year and particular congratulations to Cosby Golf Club on getting both of their teams to the final and to Carolyn Parkes-Walley on winning for two consecutive years but with different partners.   Thank you to all of the supporters who turned out to cheer on their respective teams during the day and contributed to making it a special day.

The teams were represented by the following players:

Cosby A - Carolyn Parkes-Walley and Luke Burrows
Cosby B – Gemma Parkes-Walley and John Fairbrother
Kirby Muxloe – Annabel Bailey and Simon Jackson
Longcliffe – Sarah Haslum and Steve Critchley
