The first day of the Leicestershire & Rutland County Championships took place today, Friday 5 May 2017 at Kibworth Golf Club. Following several last-minute injuries, a field of 24 of the County’s lady golfers took to the course in sunny but blustery conditions.
All competitors played 36 holes stroke play to qualify for the knock out stages of this year's Championship. The top eight players qualify for the Championship quarter and semi-finals and the next eight qualify for the Russell Trophy quarter and semi-finals due to be played on Saturday 6 May.
The course was in fabulous condition but players found conditions difficult due to the blustery wind. Putting seemed to be a particular issue for everyone but despite this there were some good scores returned in both the morning and afternoon sessions.
The best gross score of the day over the two rounds was 153 by Carolyn Parkes-Walley of Cosby Golf Club. The net prize went to Trish Formoy, playing at her home club, with a gross score of 177 less 32 to give a net score of 145. Second net was Gemma Parkes-Walley of Cosby Golf Club with a gross score of 157 less 10 to give a net score of 147.
The eight qualifiers for the Championship match play are Carolyn Parkes-Walley, Gemma Parkes-Walley, Helen Lowe, Tracy Bourne, Ellie York, Olivia Barrs, Imogen Huxley, and Helen Perry.
The eight qualifiers for the Russell Trophy match play are Suzanne Knott, Trish Formoy, Rachel East, Claire Keogh, Claire Bailey, Janice Kelly, Sharon Statham and Cath Arter.
A good day was had by all and we now look forward to the quarter and semi-finals of both the Championship and the Russell Trophy which take place tomorrow. All supporters are welcome.
