2020 Championship final day report
Once again after a chilly start, the sun shone on the final day of the 2020 L&RLCGA County Championship at Lingdale Golf Club. It could not have been better for players and spectators. Four players remained to contest the finals of the Championship and the Russell Trophy.
The Russell Trophy final was played over 18 holes – the finalists this year being Gemma Parkes-Walley (Lutterworth) and Francesca Brimm (Glen Gorse). The first two holes were halved, but although Gemma won the 4th, Francesca went on to win four of the next 6 holes, to lead by three after nine holes. Some excellent golf was played by both competitors, but Francesca played very steadily to win the match 5 and 3. Congratulations to Francesca on winning the Russell Trophy and to Gemma for reaching the final and making it such an excellent match.
The Championship final was battled out over 36 holes – Ellie York (Hinckley) and Caz Parkes-Walley (Lutterworth) were the finalists today. The match was extremely closely fought throughout, and at the half way stage after 18 holes, Ellie was 2 holes up. There was some stunning golf played, in particular some excellent tee shots. The good golf continued into the second 18 holes, a real treat for the spectators, with Ellie eventually managing to win the match on the 18th hole to become the L&RLCGA 2020 County Champion.
Some excellent golf has been played throughout the weekend, in the most amazing weather and all the spectators have enjoyed watching the progress of the golfers over the three days.
Congratulations to all our players and winners over this weekend, and particularly to Ellie York our 2020 Champion, for winning this Championship for the second time and to our Runner up Caz Parkes-Walley.
Thank you to all supporters and to Lingdale Golf Club for their support and welcome throughout the weekend.
