2024 County Championship Finals Weekend

LRLCGA Noticeboard : 2024 County Championship Finals Weekend

The sun shone once again on Day 2 of the L&R LCGA Championship at Scraptoft Golf Club and as ever, there was some excellent golf played with some very close matches.

Sixteen players, including one junior, battled it out in the quarter-finals match play of both the County Championship and the Russell Trophy in the morning session.  There were convincing wins in two of the matches, the rest were all very close, with two finishing on the 18th.

Holly Waterfield, Gabriella Crowfoot (junior), Jo Morris-Bourne and Ellie York came out on top in the Championship matches after the morning session and qualified for the semi-finals in the afternoon.  Sally Jee, Bethany Swain, Rachel East and Suzanne Pretty won their matches in the Russell Trophy quarter finals.

The afternoon matches were extremely hard fought with Holly Waterfield finishing 1 up after 19 holes, and Jo Morris-Bourne winning 2 and 1 to qualify for the 36 hole final on Sunday.  The winning semi-finalists for the Russell Trophy were Bethany Swain and Rachel East.

With a third day of sunshine, the stage was set on Sunday for the final day of the Championship.   It could not have been better for players and spectators.  Four players remained to contest the finals of the Championship and the Russell Trophy.

The Russell Trophy final was played over 18 holes – the finalists being Bethany Swain (Ullesthorpe ) and Rachel East  (Cosby).  Some excellent golf was played by both competitors, but Rachel played steadily to win the match 4 and 2.  Congratulations to Rachel on winning the Russell Trophy and to Bethany for reaching the final and making it such an excellent match.

The Championship final was battled out over 36 holes between Holly Waterfield (Lutterworth) and Jo Morris-Bourne (Willesley Park).   Holly played a very impressive first 18 holes and at the end of the first round was 7 up. However in the afternoon Jo fought hard and managed to hold Holly’s lead at 7, but finally it proved too much and Holly won the match 7 and 5 to become the 2024 L&R LCGA Champion for the first time. There was some stunning golf played by both players and it was a treat to watch for all the spectators.

Other winners over the three days were Caz Parkes-Walley who won the Cathy Stephens Trophy for the best gross score during the qualifying round, Jo Morris-Bourne who was the Senior’s Champion and Gabriella Crowfoot who won the Junior prize and the Buckingham Cup for the best net scored by a Junior during the 36 hole qualifying competition.

Some excellent golf has been played throughout the Championship and after all the rain, it was wonderful to have three days of sunshine with all the spectators enjoying watching the progress of the golfers.

Congratulations to all our players and winners over this weekend, and particularly to Holly Waterfield our 2024 Champion, and to our Runner up Jo Morris-Bourne.

Thank you to all the supporters and to Scraptoft Golf Club for their support and welcome throughout the weekend.
