Yet another day of hot and sunny weather greeted the players in the finals of the Championship and the Russell Trophy today at Hinckley Golf Club.
The finalists for the Russell Trophy, Jo Mayfield (Kirby Muxloe) and Emily Dunne (Park Hill) tee-d off first, the final being played over 18 holes. It was a close fought match throughout, Jo led most of the way round although Emily showed her true colours by fighting back strongly only to lose on the 16th hole 3 and 2. Congratulations to Jo on winning the Russell Trophy and to Emily for reaching the final – extra special congratulations to Emily as she is still only 14 years old and has a great golfing future ahead.
The Championship final was battled out over 36 holes – Tracy Bourne (Willesley Park) and Ellie York (Hinckley) were our finalists today. At the half way stage after 18 holes, Ellie was 6 holes up. Tracy fought back to get it to 4 down after 25 holes. Ellie hit a great shot into the 26th hole to go 5 up and went 6 up after the 28th hole. After some stunning shots from both players Ellie finally triumphed on the 33rd hole to win 4 and 3. Ellie, at 18 years old is another of our County Juniors and the 2016 Junior County Captain, and showed tremendous strength of character and skill throughout the tournament.
Some excellent golf has been played throughout the weekend, the weather has been mostly kind and all spectators have enjoyed following the progress of the golfers over the three days.
Congratulations to all our players and winners over this weekend, and particularly to Ellie York our 2016 Champion at her home Club.
Thank you yet again to all supporters and to Hinckley Golf Club for their support and welcome throughout the weekend.
