On Sunday 22 April 2017 new Captain Claire Keogh led out the girls of Leicestershire & Rutland in their first fixture of the season in the Midland Region North Junior Inter-County League. They played against Derbyshire in the morning and Shropshire in the afternoon at Ashbourne Golf Club.
The team had 3 girls making their debut and first taste of the prospect of 36 holes of match play on a very hilly course.
In the match against Derbyshire the result hinged on a tightly fought game played by Victoria Mayfield which went down the 18th all square; holding her nerve with a long putt Victoria won the game 1up. This meant that the team match resulted in a draw - Beth Swain had secured a half point, Francesca Brimm got her first win at this level but the opponents for Holly Waterfield and Claire Keogh proved to be more in form and they lost their games.
With the weather getting colder and the wind stronger the afternoon match against Shropshire was a test of both stamina and skill. Captain Claire Keogh secured the only point with an emphatic win 6 & 5. The other girls tried very hard but were beaten on the day.
Overall, the girls played with spirit and determination. They learned a lot about the strengths and weaknesses of their games but above all they enjoyed the experience.
Thanks as always to the parents for their support.
