The weather remained cool for the final day of the 2019 L&RLCGA County Championship at The Leicestershire Golf Club, but it was very much brighter, making it more pleasant for both players and spectators. Four players remained to contest the finals of the Championship and the Russell Trophy.
The Russell Trophy final was played over 18 holes – the finalists this year being Kirsten Thorpe (Charnwood Forest) and Helen Perry (Market Harborough). Kirsten had an excellent start to the match parring the first three holes and putting her 3 up but after this, the pair were very closely matched with some excellent golf being played by both competitors. Unfortunately the 3 hole lead at the beginning proved impossible for Helen to overcome and Kirsten won the match 4 and 3 with a birdie on the 15th hole. Congratulations to Kirsten on winning the Russell Trophy in her Junior County Captain’s year and to Helen for reaching the final and making it such an excellent match.
The Championship final was battled out over 36 holes – Helen Lowe (Scraptoft) and Caz Parkes-Walley (Lutterworth) were the finalists today. The match was very closely fought throughout and at the half way stage after 18 holes, Caz was 2 holes up. There was some stunning golf played, in particular some excellent approach shots into the green but also some superb rescue shots. The good golf continued into the second 18 holes, a real treat for the spectators, with Caz eventually managing to win the match on the 16th hole to become the L&RLCGA 2019 County Champion.
Some excellent golf has been played throughout the weekend, despite the rather chilly and damp conditions but all the spectators have enjoyed following the progress of the golfers over the three days.
Congratulations to all our players and winners over this weekend, and particularly to Caz Parkes-Walley our 2019 Champion, for winning this Championship for the third time in a row and to our Runner up Helen Lowe who also won the Strokeplay Championship on Friday.
Thank you to all supporters and to The Leicestershire Golf Club for their support and welcome throughout the weekend.
