Junior 1st Team Report
The girls of Leicestershire & Rutland faced tough opposition on a testing course in their latest
matches in the Midland Region North Junior Inter-County League on Monday 8 August 2016 at
Chevin GC, Derbyshire. The morning match was against Nottinghamshire while the afternoon
challenge was against the unbeaten Staffordshire.
Junior County Captain Ellie York was unavailable but the ever resilient Olivia Barrs (Vice
Captain) stepped up to the plate, winning both her matches convincingly (2&1 and 5 &3). Emily
Dunne, fresh from a solid performance in the England-U16 girls championship, went to the 18th in
both her matches before securing a half and a win 2up. Beth Swain, who was suffering from
illness, lost both her matches but rejoiced in getting an eagle on the par 4 sixth in the morning
match. Claire Keogh fought well in the morning, coming back from being 4 down to gain a half
point. In the afternoon it was ‘nip and tuck’ although Claire generally had the upper hand;
however, when she lost her ball in the thick first cut on the 15th she conceded the hole. She
showed real grit winning the next hole but eventually lost on the 18th. Lucy Fisher-Garfield,
making her first appearance for the County this season, played well but lost to a very strong
player in the morning. In the afternoon she grew in confidence, playing some stunning shots, but
came up just short to lose 2&1. Our 2nd team regular, Katie Leck, made her first team debut.
She lost her morning match 3&2 but, showing some impressive short game skills, pushed her
afternoon opponent right to the 18th before eventually losing 1 down.
Leicestershire and Rutland V Nottinghamshire = Lost 4 -2
Leicestershire and Rutland V Staffordshire = Lost 4-2
After the matches Team Manager Jane Horwood said; “The girls should be really proud of the
way they played today! At the halfway point in the afternoon they were leading in 5 of the 6
matches, threatening to really upset the league standings against the unbeaten Staffordshire
The final league fixtures of the season will be played at the Midland North Region Festival of
Girls Golf on Monday 22 August 2016, at Trent Lock GC. This event, the first of its kind in the
country, will be a celebration of girls golf. The 1st team face a mid-table clash with Lincolnshire
while the 2nd team will play Shropshire. Alongside these important league matches there will be
a 9-hole competition aimed at girls who are just starting out in golf. Other attractions include a
trick shot demonstration, a chance to win prizes on the fun Pirates course and some
coaching/skills challenges overseen by one of the country’s leading women PGA professionals. A
huge amount of planning has been put into the organisation of the day, which promises to be a
great day out for the whole family.
