Match Report Midland North Region – Finals Day

22 August 2016

The final matches in the Midland North Region leagues took place at Trent Lock GC on Monday 22 August 2016. The 1st and 2nd team were in action as part of a festival of girls golf which also featured a 9 hole event for girls that are new to golf. In addition to the competitive side there were fun challenges such as playing a round on the Pirate mini golf course, some skills challenges overseen by PGA Professional Alison Johns and a sensational trick shot demonstration by Rob Brown. In all there were over a hundred girls from 6 counties taking part with great fun had by all.

The 1st team had a very tough fixture against Lincolnshire to decide the final league position for the 2016 season. The team led by Ellie York, in her last game for the county juniors, managed secure a 3 – 3 draw leaving us on equal points for 3rd position. However, after counting back individual games won and lost we ended up 4th overall with Staffordshire top, Nottinghamshire runners up, Lincolnshire 3rd and Derbyshire and Shropshire below us.

Individual results – Ellie York won 4&3, Olivia Barrs won 2&1, Kirsten Thorpe lost 5&4, Claire Keogh won 3&2, Beth Swain lost 5&4 and Katie Leck lost 1down on the last hole after coming back from 3 down with 4 to play.

The 2nd team played Shropshire in their match winning 2 games and claiming the other 2 as walk overs because Shropshire could not field a full team. This meant that we finished 5th out of 6 in the league.

Individual results- Holly Waterfield and Lucy Millard won 2 up in both their games. Ruth Brooks and Hannah Garner Stephens played a 18 hole stableford between themselves.

Leicestershire and Rutland had 7 girls playing for the county in the 9 hole event; Emily Wolverson, Hannah Davey, Katie Swain, Ellie Chandler, Sophia Rees, Stephanie Couzens and Kerry Thorpe. They all had good games but the course may have been too short for them to really demonstrate their full range of skills. However, the team comprising Emily Wolverson, Ellie Chandler and Kerry Thorpe took the runners up prize which was presented by Laura Spray from England Golf.
