DAY 2 REPORT COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Another cold and overcast day so umbrellas were up as play started. Former Championship winner Jo Morris(Willesley Park) won her match against Home Club player Sarah Haslum 2 & 1. Sarah had an early lead but Jo won a run of several holes on the back 9 to take the match. Junior player Eleanor Bailey (Kirby Muxloe) won a close fought match against Tracy Bourne (Willesley Park )which went all the way to the 18th. Eleanor Parkinson (Willesley Park), a Junior in the Midlands Development Squad beat the Qualifying Day Nett winner, Diana Miller (Lingdale), 4&3. The last Championship Quarter Final between Helen Lowe (Scraptoft) and junior Holly Waterfield (Lutterworth) had to go to the 19th hole for Helen to win 1 up.
Russell Trophy matches saw Suzanne Pretty (Longcliffe) win 6 & 4 against Alexis Cummins (The Leicestershire). Alexis birdied two Par 3s and hit a long ball according to her opponent. Fiona Sharman (Luffenham) and Lisa Porter (Lingdale) played a good match which Fiona won 6 & 4. Ellie York (Hinckley) led from the start in her match against Paula McCourt (Beedles Lake), even birdying the second, and eventually winning 7 & 6. Spectators knew the last quarter- final must be close as they waited for Francesca Brimm (Glen Gorse) and Rachel Miller (Longcliffe) to appear on the 18th.This last hole was birdied by Junior Francesca Brimm to win the match 2 up. Rachel described a really good match where she knew she had a fight on her hands when Francesca’s 100 mph chip on the 7th hit the pin and dropped in!
Experience won through in the Championship semi-final match when Jo Morris beat Eleanor Bailey 4 & 2. Meanwhile Helen Lowe and Eleanor Parkinson couldn’t get enough of Longcliffe…… their match went to the 25th hole before an amazing win by a very cool Eleanor. The spectators were almost disappointed it had to end!
Ellie York, last year’s Championship winner, won her match against Francesca Brimm 7 & 6, to see her through to Sunday’s Final of the Russell Trophy. Suzanne Pretty and Fiona Sharman played a very exciting match which Suzanne won on the 20th hole after Fiona’s approach shot went in the ditch.
All in all a very exciting day which promises some great Final matches tomorrow. Fingers crossed for the weather….
