2023 Baxter Trophy Winners - Clayton Turvey and Joanne Morris-Bourne (Willesley Park Golf Club)

Over the last two Sundays some excellent mixed foursomes golf has been played at Willesley Park Golf Club, as 36 pairs from across Leicestershire and Rutland competed for the prestigious Baxter Trophy.

The weather was fantastic for both days of competition, although the first Sunday was exceptionally warm and the second very cold, but the sun shone on both days and the course was in excellent condition.  Some very good scores were recorded with the four qualifying semi finalists from the first week being Jack Merry and Maz Sharpe (Rothley Park) Gross 70, Clayton Turvey and Joanne Morris-Bourne (Willesley Park) Gross 71, Peter Brough and Carolyn Parkes-Walley (Lutterworth) Gross 73, and David Smith and Karen Haynes (Luffenham Heath) Gross 73.

In the first semi final Luffenham Heath beat Rothley Park on the 17th (3 and 1) and in the second Willesley Park beat Lutterworth (4 and 3) to set up a final between Luffenham Heath and Willesley Park.  The final was closely fought and went to the 18th but Willesley Park, on their home course, finished 2 Up to win the 2023 Baxter Trophy.

Thanks to Willesley Park Golf Club for hosting the competition and for making everyone so welcome and to the referees Phil Askew and Angela Allington. Congratulations to all those players who reached the semi finals and particular congratulations to the eventual winners Clayton Turvey and Joanne Morris-Bourne from Willesley Park Golf Club.

Other prizes from the Qualifying Day were:

Best Gross - Jack Merry and Maz Sharpe (Rothley Park) - Gross 70

Best Nett – Joe Marvell and Joanne Brocksopp (Birstall) Nett 69

Second Nett  - John Fairbrother and Rachel East (Cosby) Nett 70

Thanks from President Alison

Hello Ladies,

First of all I would like to thank you all for making me so welcome at your Clubs when I have visited you this year.  Part of my reasoning to visit all the clubs in the county is to build the relationship between county and clubs and to increase ladies awareness of what is available for them in different handicap categories.

Two of the events that have been open to almost all Club golfers have been the President’s Day at my own Club Ullesthorpe Court and the Autumn AM AM at Beedles Lake and I would like to thank all the ladies that attended both these open events.  There was a wonderful turn out for both.  The prize winners at each were spread across the county, covering all handicaps.

In respect of President’s Day many thanks must go to Ullesthorpe Court for giving us courtesy of the course, and to all the ladies that made cakes and helped out wherever needed.  We raised £630 on the raffle, half to Ullesthorpe Captain’s charity and half to mine, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.  Thank you.

Again thanks to Beedles Lake for hosting the Autumn AM AM and as with President’s Day, the weather was kind to us at Beedles Lake. The raffle raised £118 for each charity.

So looking forward to next year, there are a lot of events for you to attend including County Captain’s day at Longcliffe on 18th August and hopefully another County AM AM…..watch the web site for information on these and many other events in which you can take part. If you’re not sure please contact us and we will point you in the right direction.

Finally thank you all again for your support throughout the year.

Beedles Lake win 90th Ladies' County Foursomes Final

Following two closely fought matches between Beedles Lake and Cosby, which included a rain break when the players had to come in because of thunder and lightning, Beedles Lake emerged the overall winners of the 2023 Ladies' County Foursomes, 2 up.  It is the first time Beedles Lake have made a County final, which was played at The Leicestershire this year, and therefore the first time they have won this competition.  There was some excellent golf played by both teams to the delight of the spectators who came along to support.

Beedles Lake were represented by Sophie Coleman and Victoria Brackenbury, and Donna Canning and Paula Mccourt.

Cosby's Team were Rachel East and Leona Harris, and Sharon Statham and Gill Coleman.

Past LRLCGA President becomes Chair of England Golf Trust

Former England Golf Trust grant recipient Moira Page becomes chair of the charity

England Golf Trust’s new chair Moira Page was given a helping hand by the charity as a teenager.
Now, she is heading up the organisation and is looking forward to helping other young people on their golfing journey.
‘It is so satisfying to see young golfers develop and I am looking forward to leading an organisation that can support that and truly make a difference to a young person’s life.’
Some of the case studies I read about England Golf Trust grant recipients are inspirational and it will be an honour to help build on the great work done so far,’ she added.
A qualified Chartered Management Accountant as well as a member of the Association of Accounting Technicians, Moira has worked as a freelance finance director for the last 13 years. Her professional background brings a wealth of expertise in financial management, corporate governance, and how non-profit organisations function.
Moira is based in Leicestershire and is a member of Glen Gorse Golf Club where she plays golf to a high standard. She has won her County Championship four times, her County Junior Championship twice and her club championship 28 times.
She has captained the County Second team once and the County First team twice and has also served as County President once.
In her spare time, she served as an elected non-executive director on the audit and finance committee of the Board of England Golf.
She started playing golf as a teenager and has loved the sport ever since. ‘I was always sporty and got involved in any team sport going, including hockey, netball and rounders.’
‘When I was 14, I took up golf alongside my Dad and I achieved a handicap of 9 in my first season of playing.’
‘The following year I brought my handicap down to 2 and began playing in some national events such as the English Girls Championships at Huddersfield Golf Club.’
To help me play in some of these events I received funding through the Ladies County
Association and from EWGA trust which is the former of EGT.’
'At 16 I left school so that I could pursue my golfing career. I was supported by further funding from the Trust and Martin Bowl. This meant I could compete in the English and British Girls, the English and British strokeplay and a number of other events including the Formby Leveret.’

Moira established that she was a good amateur but was unlikely to succeed as a golfer - so she decided to focus on a career in accountancy. However, she continues to enjoy amateur golf.
‘I can honestly say the game of golf has played a fundamental part in my life and in my personal development. It has certainly taught me a lot – and has humbled me on many occasions,’ she says.
